Why Respite Care?

In recent years, the challenges faced by caregivers of individuals living with dementia have gained increased recognition. Within the United States, an estimated 6.7 million people are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. A dementia diagnosis is devastating and brings not only neurological changes to the person with dementia, but also impacts their families financially, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

As we step into an era where dementia cases are on the rise, acknowledging and addressing the needs of caregivers becomes paramount. Community-based care offers a plethora of advantages that extend beyond the confines of traditional healthcare settings. Though caregivers have access to resources through books and the internet, what they need most is connection with others living with a dementia diagnosis who truly understand their daily challenges. A safe setting for their loved one living with dementia is also critical. Ministering to the spirit of that person and to their families is often forgotten, but essential. Using this collaborative approach, the new respite program is designed to provide relief and support, address burnout, foster a sense of belonging, reduce stress and isolation, and enhance the overall quality of life for both caregivers and those they care for.
